I have no experience when it comes to real game design. The most I have ever done is simple text editing of config files, some very basic modding in "The Elder Scrolls Skyrim" and a messing around with a few other game editing tools a couple of hours until I eventually give up.
As of late I have a lot more free time and I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to start learning game design and put a serious effort into it. The only problem with this plan is I already feel totally overwhelmed just browsing through the hundreds of forums, guides, etc. I really don't know where to start. I want to start with a simple project and work my way up. I was thinking of eventually making an open world area with a controllable character and just adding things as I go and maybe one day I can make an actual game out of it.
Are there any skills I need before I start to learn or can I learn everything I need through various unity guides, books, videos, etc? I would appreciate it if some of you wonderful individuals who actually know what you're doing would point me in the right direction.
I am one of those people who can grasp things quickly if I'm interested in it and actually making some progress as I learn, but if it takes me awhile to even get started I tend to give up which makes the learning process of things like game development a struggle for me. I am hoping to change that now and put in the effort needed, I just need a push in the right direction.
